Matt Smith is a California native, having grown up in Los Angeles, and a resident of the Bay Area since 1999, first in San Francisco and most recently, Sausalito. He is the author of “I am Applicant” and various short essays on the California Housing Crisis.

In 2015, Matt and his wife moved from San Francisco to Sausalito, CA, where they purchased a fixer-upper for their growing family. Their journey exposed them to numerous challenges, including bureaucratic hurdles, construction costs, and a small-town political environment resolved in opposing new housing development. Through persistence and navigation of these obstacles, Matt gained insights into the complexities of building a home in a wealthy coastal community.

I Am Applicant is the story of Matt and his family’s seven year odyssey in building a home in Sausalito, CA.
