The Unlikely Political Alliance Between San Francisco’s “Progressives” On The East Side, And The NIMBYs On The West Side.

Our Board of Supervisor member in this districts needed (and continues to need) to win both of these groups over to win.  How does he do that? How did this specific Board of Supervisor get elected to his seat in 2019? 

Well, here you have a candidate who had, previously to seeking office, founded a nonprofit whose mission statement was to dedicate itself to “defending and advancing the rights of California tenants to safe, decent, and affordable housing.” So he has satisfied the Progressives. What about the NIMBYs?

In response to a proposed project in his district, he said he didn’t like the ‘look” of the new homes, and that such “plain ugly…huge modern…buildings” endanger the “fabric and character” of his “intimate, historic neighborhood.”  All you need to do is utter phrases about the “character of the neighborhood,” and you could stage dive into the adoring arms of a NIMBY crowd.
